Baby Trade
There are a couple of other full time moms on my street and we have created a system of “baby trading”. It goes like this, “I’ll take your kid before nap for a few hours, and you take my kid after nap for a few hours”. Fortunately all of our children are the same size and doing similar activities, so we don’t even have to pack a diaper bag. It is too easy!
I recently had a pretty bad head cold on a day I was supposed to have the kids. My friend didn’t want to burden me with another child when I wasn’t feeling great. I insisted that actually having a buddy for Grey would make my day easier. I get to be less of an entertainer and more of a couch potato while the boys trade toys and roam the house together.
This was Oliver’s first time doing the swap and getting left behind at my house. He missed his mama at first, but Grey was used to having friend’s over and got right down to business of sharing toys and getting Oliver to play. Grey’s other baby trading friend is his same age, whereas Oliver is a bit younger. It was interesting to see how Grey reacted to this, calling him “baby” and helping Oliver drink from his bottle. He definitely was taking on more of a caregiver role instead of a just a playmate.
They were playing so well together, I thought I could slip away for a trip to the bathroom without an audience. They noticed and came a runnin’ to ask to be let in.
They were, at least, a cute audience. And sometimes it’s nice to have someone clap for you when you flush.
