February Night Hike
Our group of 7 from January dwindled to just 3 in February. Hopefully I didn’t permanently scare them away. But BJ and I were happy to take my mom up what BJ called “the leg killer”. I yelled at her for saying that in my mom’s presence, knowing that then she would worry about its steepness more.
The wind was RIPPING and I was thankful for every piece of warm weather gear I had with me: Columbia Vest, Big Agnus Coat, Seirus Gloves, and Fleece Lined Leggings under my hiking pants.
Yes, it is a leg killer. We started straight up Lefthand Canyon behind Boulder. The moon was out and bright, but the canyon walls blocked the light for a while, so we navigated a particularly rocky beginning in complete darkness. No headlamps allowed! But once we gained enough elevation, and the moon had risen a little higher, it was like walking at noon. The moon was so bright coming over the horizon, we couldn’t look at it without squinting and ruining our night vision.

Last month, I permitted the use of a headlamp just to illuminate a group photo, but this month, we did it all by moonlight.

It was a great evening, made even better by Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt afterwards! I can always count on BJ to give in to my “ice cream after hiking” desires!
